Preparing For Surgery
Before Your Surgery
A staff member from Black Hills Surgery Center will call you a few days
before your surgery to confirm your procedure and surgery date. If you
have not been called by 4 p.m. the day before your surgery, please call
Black Hills Surgery Center at 605-721-4700 or 1-800-818-1890 after 6
p.m.
The Day Before Your Surgery
It is absolutely necessary you do not eat or drink anything, including
water, after Midnight, the night before your surgery unless you are
directed to do so by a staff member at the Black Hills Surgery Center
or your surgeon. Food in the stomach can result in serious complications
and could cause us to cancel or postpone your surgery. Avoid alcohol
and tobacco for 24 hours prior to your surgery. If you are taking medication
for high blood pressure, diabetes or nervous disorders, please visit
with a staff member.
For women, if you are or think you may be pregnant, please notify your
surgeon or healthcare professional. If you develop a cold, fever, respiratory
infection or other illness prior to surgery, please call your doctor
or the Black Hills Surgery Center. Remove nail polish.
You will not be allowed to drive yourself home following surgery. Arrange
for a responsible friend or family member to drive you home.
The Morning of your Surgery
Bathe or shower the morning of surgery. If you shampoo your hair, be
sure it is dry. Do not use hair spray or body lotion. Do not apply makeup,
especially mascara or lipstick. Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing
and shoes. Leave valuables, such as jewelry or large amounts of money
at home.
Arrive promptly to allow adequate time for necessary admission procedures.
If you wear glasses, contact lenses and/or a hearing aide, please bring
a storage case. Bring the medication you take on a daily basis in the
original bottle. Bring your insurance forms, cards and/or payment, and
any pertinent test results.
When You Arrive for your Surgery
Please arrive at the Surgery Center on time. You will be asked to sign
a surgical consent form. In the case of a minor, this form must be signed
by a parent or legal guardian. A copy of the guardianship papers is
needed for the chart. We will provide you with a patient gown, robe
and slippers. A member of the anesthesiology staff will visit with you
to discuss the type of anesthesia you will be given.
An adult member of your family or a friend can wait with you until it
is time for your surgery. This individual will have the opportunity
to visit with your doctor following surgery. Due to circumstances beyond
our control, occasionally times of surgery are delayed. If a delay occurs,
we will keep you informed.
Following Your Surgery
You will not be allowed to drive yourself home following surgery. Please
have a friend or family member take you home and stay with you for 24
hours following your surgery. Do not drive, sign important papers or
make critical decisions for at least 24 hours after surgery.
Do not operate machinery, power tools or appliances for 24 hours. Do
not drink alcoholic beverages for 24 hours. Your surgeon will give you
post-operative instructions regarding your diet, activity restrictions
and medication. If you have any difficulties, call your surgeon.
Billing Information
We will file all insurance and Medicare/Medicaid forms for you. Please
bring your social security number, prescription card, Medicare/Medicaid
card and/or insurance card with addresses.
The facility fee includes the cost of the operating room, supplies,
equipment, medication, recovery care and any overnight room charges.
If you have any questions about this fee, call the Black Hills Surgery
Center's billing department.
Charges for anesthesia care and from your doctor are not included in
the facility fee. Because X-ray, laboratory and pathology are contracted
services, you will receive separate bills for these items. (See about
Fees).
