About Us
Our Mission Lastly, Black Hills Surgical Hospital is not a facility for just the wealthy and insured patient, but for those with no insurance and little or no ability to pay their bill. In that way, we meet one of our fundamental missions—improving the health and well being of all regional residents. Our History As Rapid City grew into the region's medical hub, the need for a specialized hospital that focused on providing quality patient care and service became evident to many local healthcare providers. They began working together to devise a completely different hospital experience than residents were accustomed to. They looked at all industries and asked: "Who is doing the best job in customer service?” Clearly it was the hospitality industry. As a result, management took lessons from the Ritz-Carlton School of Hospitality and implemented the highest customer service standards to complement their vision of providing patients with excellent care. The result was a warm, inviting, quality-driven hospital that operates under a complete customer service and hospitality model. Ensuring Quality Clinical Care Research has shown clinical quality is directly correlated to the volume and frequency of procedures performed. Basically, the more generalized you are, the more difficult it is to excel at any given specialty. By definition, a specialty hospital "specializes" in select areas unlike a general hospital is able to do. Black Hills Surgical Hospital is proud to offer a team of highly skilled nurses and technologists who specialize in a select variety of surgeries because we believe by specializing in specific procedures, we’re allowing our team to do and be the best in their field. Surgeries conducted at our center include orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, general surgery, gynecology, podiatry, urology, dermatology, ophthalmology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, dental/oral surgery and bariatric/weight loss surgery. Community Commitment Black Hills Surgical Hospital has always been happy to support various local non-profit organizations. The following are just a few we’ve been proud to help in recent years: · American Heart Association · Black Hills Children’s Home/Children’s Home Foundation · Black Hills Play House · Black Hills Workshop · Boys and Girls Club of the Black Hills · Diabetes, Inc. · Junior Achievement · Rapid City Public School Foundation · Seventh Circuit Court Appointed Special Advocates’ · Wellspring Family Services · Working Against Violence, Inc. · Youth & Family Services · Zonta
Physician-Owned Hospital Disclosure Black Hills Surgical Hospital is partially owned by physicians and meets the Federal definition of a “physician-owned hospital.” A list of physician-owners is available upon request and we are happy to answer any questions you may have.
Like many hospitals in South Dakota, BHSH does not have a doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy on site 24 hours per day, seven days per week. During weekday operations, physicians are ordinarily on site from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM each day. In addition, an Emergency Response Team consisting of a Doctor of Internal Medicine, Anesthesiologist, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) are on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week. If you develop an emergency condition when a doctor of medicine or osteopathy is not present, a Registered Nurse certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) will assess your condition and begin initial treatment until the Emergency Response Team arrives.
