3T MRI Information
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is at the forefront of diagnostic imaging
tools. The system uses a magnetic field and radio waves instead of x-rays
to generate pictures of the inside of your body. Our state-of-the-art
3T MRI provides detailed images of the inner structures of your body.
These images help your physician provide a more accurate diagnosis of
your condition.
The 3T MRI system is the most advanced technology of its kind in the world.
The high field magnet produces images of amazing clarity and detail to a
degree never before possible. The result is increased diagnostic confidence
and better patient outcomes.
The new scanner also delivers the most comprehensive applications in the industry,
providing unprecedented diagnostic capabilities for the assesment of anatomy, morphology,
physiology and function. With the 3T, you will be able to evaluate a wide range of
conditions, including:
- Cardiac and vascular disease
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Abdominal conditions
- Brain disorders
- Neurological conditions and more
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is very safe. However, some special circumstances
limit the use of the magnetic field. It is important for you to tell
a staff member or your physician if any of the following apply to you
or the person accompanying you into the exam room:
- Ever
been a metal worker (had metal in an eye)
- Cardiac
pacemaker or artificial heart valve
- Metal
plate, pin or other metallic implant
- Intrauterine
device, such as Copper-7 IUD
- Insulin
pump or other infusion pump
- Aneurysm
clips
- Previous
gun shot wound
- Inner
ear implant
- Pregnant
or think you may be
Any metallic substance can affect the quality of the diagnostic images.
It can also cause you discomfort or injury when placed in the magnetic
field and may exclude you from the exam.
An MRI exam is really quite simple. It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes
and consists of several image exposures lasting 10 to 15 minutes each.
You will be asked to remove your make-up, eyeglasses, watch, jewelry,
credit cards, dentures, hearing aids and any other metallic objects
you are carrying.
Once in the exam room, our specially-trained technologist will help
you lie down on a padded table and a device called a coil will be placed
over or under you. The coil helps the MRI system take a clear picture
of your body. When you are comfortably positioned, the table will move
under the magnet. The technologist will then step into the control area,
while staying in constant communication with you both visually and through
an intercom. As the exam proceeds, you will hear a muffled thumping
sound for a few minutes at a time.
Relax and lie as still as possible. Any movement during this time will
blur the picture. If you wish, you may bring your favorite CD or cassette
tape to listen to during the exam. You may also have a family member
or friend stay with you in the exam room during the MRI.
The images from your MRI will be studied by a radiologist, a physician
trained to interpret your exam. The results will be sent to your doctor.
No special preparation is needed. Unless your doctor has given you special
instructions, eat normally and take medications as usual. You may find
it easier to relax if you avoid drinking any caffeinated beverages before
your exam.
Avoid wearing earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, jewelry and clothing
with metal zippers or snaps to the exam.
In most cases, injections are not required. However, in some situations,
a contrast agent may be needed to enhance the ability of the MRI to
see into your body. All contrast agents are FDA-approved and are considered
safe.
